Much About Matcha...What’s the Deal?

I’m sure you’ve seen many a pretty post of creamy, green deliciousness.  Earthy, grassy, and chock-full of antioxidants, matcha is an excellent alternative to coffee. While I’m certain I’m not alone in saying that I love carrying around a warm, cozy cup of coffee around with me or a nice, cold brew on a hot day as much for the caffeine as for the aesthetic, it can be really harsh on your adrenals.  Adrenal fatigue can lead to burnout, FAST.  Your stress hormones are basically just as jittery as your body may feel and THAT is not the balance our bodies crave. An excellent alternative to coffee, due to lower caffeine content and extraordinary health benefits, is matcha!  What is matcha and why does it taste like grass? Well because it kinda is.  Matcha is powdered green tea leaves that offer the potency of green tea, multiplied. Health.com states that matcha is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which have been tied to protection against heart disease and cancer, as well as better blood sugar regulation, blood pressure reduction, and anti-aging. Another polyphenol in matcha called EGCG has been shown in research to boost metabolism, and slow or halt the growth of cancer cells.” Major.

Since matcha contains less caffeine than coffee, it can also help alleviate anxiety (caused by an excess of caffeine) and improve your sleep.  I wouldn’t recommend downing a cup at night, but it is definitely the perfect alternative for your coffee date with friends or in place of brunch cocktails.

It took me some time to really love a matcha latte until I started adding collagen and a splash of maple syrup to it. My go-to at home is matcha, macadamia nut milk, collagen powder, maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon.  Let me know if you love it and how you make your perfect cup!

xo, Kristen

P.S. - you can also get these chic accessories to elevate your matcha at home: a whisk, bowl, spoon, tea kettle and mug!
